It was again an impressive performance by Rahmatganj Muslim and Friends Society as the old Dhaka outfit confirmed their spot of final of the Federation Cup football as they came from behind upset ten-men Mohammedan Sporting Club by 2-1 goals in the first semifinal held Thursday.
Rahmatganj will now play the final match against second semifinal winners either Saif Sporting Club or Abahani Limited, Dhaka scheduled to be held on Sunday (Jan 9) at the same venue.
In the day’s match, Ghanaian forward Philip Adjah Tettey and Nigerian forward Sunday Chizoba scored one each for Rahmatganj who trailed the first half by 0-1 goal.
Held at Birshreshtha Shaheed Sepoy Mohammad Mostafa Kamal Stadium in the city’s Kamalapur, Mohammedan, who took the field in the day’s semifinal with favorite tag, had to wait a little time to take the lead when defender Rajib Hossain put the first blood for Mohammedan in the very 5th minute of the match.
Things were going well with Mohammedan as they able to keep their lead intact till the breather. After the resumption Rahmatganj were desperately trying to stage a fight back in the match and their best moment came Philip Adjah Tettey brought Rahmatganj in the match scoring the first goal in the 78th minute.
At one stage it was seemed the match was going to roll for extra time, but it was Sunday who finally ensured the victory for Rahmatganj scoring the second goal in the 90+1st minute of the match.
Mohammedan was reduced to ten men as their Macedonian defender Jasmin was shown red card by referee Jalaluddin following the double yellow cards.
Philip Adjah Tettey of Rahmatganj was named the player of the match for his impressive performance in the match.
Earlier, in the quarterfinal matches, the traditional black and white Motijheel outfit Mohammedan reached the last four defeating Chittagong Abahani Limited by 2-1 goals while the old Dhaka outfit Rahmatganj booked their spot of semifinal beating Sheikh Russel Krira Chakra by 4-3 goals.
