The Lionel Messi chapter has come to an end at Barcelona. The Argentine is edging closer to finding an agreement with Paris Saint-Germain after leaving the Camp Nou, and details of what went wrong continue to come out.

Despite an agreement having been reached between Messi and the clubs for a matter of weeks, and his contract extension seeming all but signed, the Catalan club confirmed on Thursday that he would not be continuing with them in 2021/22.

Now, El Chiringuito are reporting some details of where things went south. Leo and Jorge Messi – the player’s father and agent – arrived in Barcelona with the intention of signing his renewal, for which he had agreed to take a 40 percent pay cut.

When they arrived and met with the club, though, there was another surprise awaiting them. Barcelona requested yet further sacrifices on Messi’s part, and wanted him to reduce his salary by 70 percent, not the agreed upon 40 percent. That left Jorge Messi frustrated, and he didn’t hold back in his words to Rafael Yuste.
